SANTAQUIN MOTHER & DAUGHTER TEAM WALK TO FIGHT CANCER
Lynn Peterson’s mother died of breast cancer when Lynn was only 16 years old, so she knows what it is like to grow up without a mother to guide her through life’s ups and downs. Her greatest wish is that no other teenager will ever have to go through what she experienced so when her daughter Rachel suggested that they participate in the “San Francisco Avon Breast Cancer Walk” she thought that this would be a way for her to help fulfill that wish.
She and her daughter each raised $2,000.00 for breast cancer research and then they both headed to San Francisco for the walk to help raise awareness for the cause. Rachel flew in from Maryland where she lives and Lynn drove to San Francisco to meet her there. They walked a total of 40 miles, walking 27 miles the first day and 13 miles the second. There were more than 3,200 other people that joined them and together they raised 5.5 million dollars for breast cancer research and treatment.
As they trudged up and down the hills of San Francisco hundreds of people honked their horns, cheered and applauded as they walked on united in this cause. “It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life.” stated Lynn. “Walking with all these people whose lives have been touched in some way by this horrible disease was truly inspirational. We shared our life stories and laughed and cried all along the route.”
“Every three minutes someone in America is diagnosed with breast cancer. It attacks the young and the old and both men and women. As we walked on the route every three minutes they would put a pink sash on someone to represent another person having breast cancer. It was frightening at the end of the walk to see how many people had the sashes representing the cases of cancer that were diagnosed while we were walking. They are making great strides in the battle against this disease with gene therapy and treatments. It no longer is a death warrant but can be cured. Please get checked regularly. Early detection is an important key in this fight.”
Lynn wants to thank all those who donated money to the Avon Breast Cancer walk and helped her raise the $2,000.00. The money that was raised goes to a good cause which helps to make great strides in finding a cure for this type of cancer.
